Metro Focus: Boston

From Frank Tully

"One if by Land, Two if by Sea ...", Three if by Subway??

Longfellow's epic poem, The Midnight Ride of Paul Revere, describes the various transportation options around Boston on the eve of a Revolution, specifically how many lanterns our spies would use to signify British troop movements. A few centuries later, we still try to navigate crazy traffic patterns to bring about our own Revolution: a movement of the Gospel! And we still seek to shine the light of the Kingdom in some dark corners of our city. Here are some recent traffic reports:

By Land ...

In March, a dozen urban ministry practitioners from Boston participated in the African-American Congress on Discipleship in Virginia. Most of the group squeezed into a church van for the 1,200 mile journey. This provided a refreshing exposure to our Nav Vision and Calling in a context where their unique identity, complexion and even language predominated. For the first time, some expressed a desire to embrace this Calling as their own.

By (the) Sea ...

In May, we presented the Transformed Hearts Seminar at North River Community Church, focusing on Listening and Healing Prayer. Paul and Amy Carter partnered with the Navs People Resources Team to guide Stakeholders to a deeper awareness of God’s power in them.

By Subway ...

Craig and Nancy Parker moved into Boston from Dartmouth College just a short subway trip from the Boston University campus where they are already connecting with returning students and modeling lives as insiders among urban campuses.

Please Pray ...

  • That God would bless the emerging network of ethnic partners who identify with our Calling, particularly as we seek to connect them with the Spectrum Mission and collaborate in organizing an African-American Seminar for Boston next Spring.
  • That the Holy Spirit would continue to stimulate those who participated in the Transforming Hearts Seminar towards a deeper conviction of their role as Kingdom laborers with renewed vision and empowerment
  • That the emerging vision for shared ministry among urban under grads, grad students and young professionals would be well-shepherded and develop strong relational bonds.
