From Steve and Cynthia Haynes
Mentally go with me to a place some 4000+ years ago. A large impregnable city once stood here but now is just a pile of rubble. Off to the side next to a river is a small boy, curiously staring at twelve stacked boulders. His daddy approaches; “Daddy, what do these stones mean?” The father takes a deep breath and starts telling his son how God brought the Israelites out of Egypt, they wandered in the desert for forty years, arrived at the promised Canaan land, and crossed the Jordon River at flood stage on dry land. God tells each of the twelve tribes to select one boulder from the river and stack it as a permanent reminder (Joshua 4: 1-14)
Good memories make great heroes. Hasn’t He walked you through high waters? Has He not proven to be faithful? Have you not known His abundant provisions? Your enemies are nothing more than road kill. Write today's worries in the sand, but write yesterday's victories in stone.
Create some stone memories of your own. Pick them up from time-to-time and reminisce. Recall what those stones mean. Catalog God's goodness with stone memories, and tell your children and others about them. He has fed you, led you, and earned your trust.
So what are the milestones in the Washington, DC metro area? WOW! In some ways it’s like we never left and in other ways it feels like an eternity since we left for Florida. So much has changed, yet is still the same! We have only been here for four months and God has engaged us in so many lives. Here are just a few things we are doing:
One-On-Ones:
Meeting with four men one-on-one throughout the week over lunch or breakfast exploring how they to can become warriors of faith, and weekly with a group of guys over breakfast going through a book called Bos Cafe. It’s a takeoff of the John Lynch TrueFaced message of how we can get out of the room of good intentions, of being saddled with trying to please God, and move on to the room of Grace where we simply trust Him.
Faith @ Work:
We are starting a new Navigator ministry in the Washington DC metro area called Faith @ Work. The mission will be to focus on helping business and professional Christians integrate and express their faith where they work. A few weeks back, we visited a Faith @ Work ministry in Albuquerque, NM to see one in action. We envision a city where successful men and women communicate Jesus by their life activities and in word. In the context of small groups of peers, we equip them at their work place to demonstrate the:
- Justice of Christ in their negotiations
- Ethics of Christ in their decisions
- Attractiveness of Christ in their person
- Love and humility of Jesus in their relationships
- Focus of Christ in their purpose
Church Discipleship Ministry (CDM):
A few churches have approached us and are searching for how to become more intentional in discipleship. We are helping them think through what’s the difference between a program and ministry; how to reach the community they live in; assisting men to become more grounded in their faith, and sharing their homes as places to conduct small groups with local not yet Christians.
